The Muslim's Body Has Rights

The teaching that the body, eyes, family, and guests all have rights that must be balanced.

The Prophet (PBUH) said to a companion who was neglecting his family for worship: 'Your Lord has a right over you, your body has a right over you, your family has a right over you—so give each their right.' This hadith establishes the principle of balance. Excessive worship that harms health or neglects family is not praiseworthy. Islam recognizes multiple legitimate claims on a person's time and energy. Rest, recreation, family time, and social obligations are not distractions from religion but part of it. The ideal is balance, not extremism.

Your Lord has a right over you, your body has a right over you, your family has a right over you—so give each their right.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Sahih Bukhari, Book 30, Hadith 1975

The Prophet (PBUH) balanced intense worship with play with his grandchildren, joking with companions, and caring for his family—demonstrating holistic living.
