Shaja'ah - Courage

The moral courage to stand for truth and face difficulty in the path of righteousness.

Shaja'ah (الشجاعة) is courage—both physical bravery and moral courage to speak truth and stand for justice. The Prophet (PBUH) was the bravest of people, always at the front in battle and never retreating from defending truth. Courage is required for enjoining good and forbidding evil, for honesty when lying is easier, for standing with the oppressed. It is balanced by wisdom—not recklessness but calculated bravery. Courage without wisdom is foolhardiness; wisdom without courage is cowardice. True shaja'ah comes from trust in Allah and understanding that life and death are in His hands.

The best jihad is a word of truth before a tyrant ruler.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Sunan Abu Dawud, Book 37, Hadith 4330

Ali ibn Abi Talib exemplified shaja'ah—nicknamed 'Asadullah' (Lion of Allah), yet also known for wisdom and choosing peace when possible.
