Rights of the Neighbor

The extensive rights that neighbors have upon Muslims, regardless of their religion.

Huquq al-Jar (حقوق الجار) establishes neighbors' rights so strongly that the Prophet (PBUH) said he thought neighbors might become heirs. Rights extend to the nearest 40 houses in any direction. These include: not harming them, protecting their property, helping in need, visiting when sick, sharing food, and not building to block their air and light. Neighbors' rights apply regardless of their religion. The Prophet (PBUH) said: 'Jibreel kept advising me about the neighbor until I thought he would make him an heir.' One who sleeps full while their neighbor is hungry lacks true faith.

Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and be good to parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the distant neighbor.

Quran, Surah An-Nisa 4:36

Aisha (RA) asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have two neighbors. To which one should I give?' He said: 'To the one whose door is nearer to you.'

  • What Islam says about community

Neighbours are named alongside parents and relatives as people with claims on you, whatever their religion. Proximity alone is enough to create obligation.
