Environmental Stewardship

The concept of humans as trustees of the earth, responsible for its care and preservation.

Khilafah (الخلافة) in its environmental sense means humans are trustees (khulafa) on earth, not owners. The Quran says: 'It is He who has made you successors upon the earth.' This trusteeship includes responsibility for the environment. The Prophet (PBUH) prohibited wasting water even when performing ablution at a flowing river. He taught that planting a tree is charity—anyone who eats from it benefits the planter. Islam prohibits hunting animals for sport, overgrazing, and environmental destruction. Balance (mizan) must be maintained in the natural order.

And it is He who has made you successors upon the earth and has raised some of you above others in degrees that He may test you through what He has given you.

Quran, Surah Al-An'am 6:165

The Prophet (PBUH) said: 'If the Hour is about to be established and one of you has a palm shoot in his hand, and he is able to plant it before the Hour starts, he should plant it.'
