Protection of Religious Freedom
The Quranic principle that there is no compulsion in religion.
La ikraha fi al-din (لا إكراه في الدين)—'There is no compulsion in religion'—establishes religious freedom as an Islamic principle. The Quran states that truth has been made clear from falsehood, and people must choose freely. Forced conversion is invalid. Non-Muslims in Islamic territories historically practiced their religions, built places of worship, and governed internal affairs by their own laws. The Prophet's constitution of Medina guaranteed the rights of Jews and others. True faith must be voluntary, as compelled worship has no value before Allah.
There is no compulsion in religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong.
The Prophet (PBUH) welcomed the delegation of Christian Najran to pray in his mosque and engaged them in respectful dialogue, modeling religious tolerance.
