Jainism

Non-Attachment to Ideas

Aparigraha extends to not clinging to opinions and viewpoints.

Attachment to ideas, opinions, and beliefs can be as binding as material attachment. Intellectual aparigraha means holding views lightly, remaining open to correction and new understanding.

Hold your views as you would hold a bird - gently, ready to release.

Jain Philosophy, Anekantavada Application

This connects aparigraha with anekantavada (many-sidedness).

  • What Jainism says about doubt

Aparigraha, non-possessiveness, extends to opinions: an idea can be hoarded like property. The instruction is to hold a view as you would hold a bird, ready to release it, which frames doubt as a form of letting go rather than an inability to decide.
