Orenda — The Power Within All Living Things

The Haudenosaunee concept of Orenda teaches that every living being possesses an inherent spiritual force, and human virtue lies in aligning personal power with universal harmony.

The Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) people speak of Orenda — the spiritual power that animates all living beings. It is neither entirely personal nor entirely external but the spiritual force through which beings participate in creation. Skilled hunters, gifted speakers, exceptional leaders, and powerful medicine keepers were said to possess great Orenda — not because they took more than others, but because their Orenda was in deep alignment with the sacred patterns of life. The Great Law of Peace, Gayanashagowa, is itself an expression of collective Orenda — the gathered spiritual force of a people choosing justice over war.

The greatest strength is gentleness.

Anthropologist J.N.B. Hewitt, who first documented Orenda in 1902, noted it as the clearest Indigenous North American parallel to concepts of divine immanence found in world mystical traditions.
