The Seven Grandfather Teachings of the Anishinaabe
The Anishinaabe received seven sacred gifts from the Seven Grandfathers: Nibwaakaawin (Wisdom), Zaagi'idiwin (Love), Minaadendamowin (Respect), Aakode'ewin (Bravery), Gwayakwaadiziwin (Honesty), Dabaadendiziwin (Humility), and Debwewin (Truth).
The Seven Grandfather Teachings form the ethical core of Anishinaabe (Ojibwe/Chippewa) civilization. According to the oral tradition, the Creator sent seven sacred beings to observe humanity's suffering. They brought back a young child who was raised by the elders and given these seven teachings to carry back to the people. Each teaching is embodied by a specific animal: the beaver (wisdom), the eagle (love), the buffalo (respect), the bear (bravery), the sasquatch (honesty), the wolf (humility), and the turtle (truth). These teachings are not merely moral rules but living principles — each one interdependent on the others, so that true wisdom requires all seven simultaneously.
Wisdom is given by the Creator to be used for the good of the people.
The Seven Grandfather Teachings form the foundation of modern Indigenous education programs across Canada and the United States, recognized as a complete ethical system.
