Abandoning Other Supports for the One Support
Single-minded devotion means giving up reliance on all other refuges and clinging to God alone.
Narada illustrates exclusive devotion in Sutra 10: 'Anyashrayanam tyago ananyata' — 'Single-mindedness is the abandonment of all other refuges.' The devotee learns to release every other support — social, material, even religious props — and to lean wholly upon the Divine. This is not recklessness but the radical trust of one who has found the only refuge that cannot fail. By withdrawing dependence from the impermanent, the devotee's whole being comes to rest in the imperishable. Narada's teaching anticipates the principle of total surrender found in later Vaishnava theology as prapatti — the casting of oneself entirely upon God's grace, holding back no secret reserve.
Single-mindedness is the abandonment of all other refuges.
The abandonment of all other refuges mirrors the Buddhist act of going for refuge, yet here the single refuge is the personal Beloved rather than the impersonal Dharma.
