Narada Bhakti Sutras

Total Refuge in the Beloved (Prapatti)

The path of renunciation culminates in prapatti, the casting of oneself wholly and finally upon the Beloved's grace.

Narada brings the theme of renunciation to its consummation in total self-entrustment, what the later tradition would call prapatti. Here the devotee abandons every other strategy for his own salvation and simply throws himself upon the mercy of the Beloved, confident that love will not let him fall. This is the great act of letting go that contains all lesser renunciations within it, the heart's unconditional surrender holding back no secret reserve. In that moment the burden of self-salvation lifts, and the devotee is carried by a grace that asks only for his consent. It is the perfect trust of the child who leaps, knowing the arms below will surely catch him.

Cast yourself wholly upon the Beloved, and His grace will bear you.

Narada, Narada Bhakti Sutras, Sutra 67

Narada's total refuge prefigures the Vaishnava doctrine of prapatti, self-surrender as the supreme and all-sufficient means of grace.
