Narada Bhakti Sutras

The Devotee Becomes an Instrument of the Divine

Narada teaches that the one perfected in love lives as a willing instrument through which the Divine acts in the world.

The devotee who has wholly surrendered in love becomes a transparent instrument of the Divine, their own will so merged with the beloved's that grace flows through them unobstructed. Such souls act, but no longer from egoism; the Lord works through their hands, speaks through their words, and loves through their hearts. This is the fruit of self-surrender ripened to its completion: not passivity but the highest activity, performed without the friction of self-interest. The traditions see in such lovers the very presence of the Divine made visible in human form. Their life becomes a continual offering and a continual blessing. Emptied of self, they are filled with the One they love, and become His living expression.

Be merely the instrument; the Lord Himself acts through the surrendered devotee.

The ideal of the self as a transparent instrument of the Divine parallels the prayer attributed to Francis of Assisi, 'make me an instrument of Your peace,' expressing a shared mystical vision of egoless cooperation with grace.
