Weapons as Sacred Objects
A warrior's weapons carry their own spirit and reputation; they are treated with reverence.
Norse weapons, especially swords, were named and treated as almost living beings. They accumulated reputation through the deeds performed with them. A famous sword was inherited treasure, carrying the luck and fame of previous wielders.
A good sword has a name; speak it with respect, for it has earned its fame.
Weapon naming reflects the Norse belief in the spiritual aspect of material things.
