Lakshmi — The Goddess of Flowing Fortune

Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, prosperity, and auspiciousness, embodies the truth that abundance is a living energy that must flow and be honored rather than merely hoarded.

Lakshmi, consort of Vishnu, is revered throughout the Hindu world as the bestower of both material and spiritual riches, depicted seated on a lotus with gold coins flowing from her hand. Her mythology teaches a subtle lesson: she is chanchala, restless and ever-moving, dwelling only where there is cleanliness, diligence, righteousness, and devotion, and departing where there is sloth or arrogance. Wealth, in this vision, is not an inert possession but a guest who stays where she is welcomed by virtue and put to good use. The lotus on which she sits, rising unstained from the mud, signifies prosperity that remains pure amid the world. Worshippers invoke her not only to gain riches but to gain the wisdom to keep and rightly employ them, a teaching that anticipates the modern observation that sustaining wealth requires character and stewardship, not merely acquisition.

Where there is righteousness and diligence, there Lakshmi dwells.

Hindu tradition, Sri Suktam (theme)

The depiction of Lakshmi as restless and virtue-seeking anticipates research showing that lasting wealth depends less on windfalls than on the disciplined character that retains and deploys resources wisely.
