Wealth Without Sorrow — The Blessing of the Lord

Proverbs declares that the blessing of the Lord brings wealth without the painful toil and anxiety that often accompany ill-gotten or feverishly pursued riches.

Proverbs offers a luminous ideal: 'The blessing of the Lord makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.' The verse distinguishes between two kinds of wealth — that which arrives with the gnawing sorrow of anxiety, guilt, or broken relationships, and that which comes as a true blessing, accompanied by peace. The wisdom tradition repeatedly warns that the one who hurries to be rich, or gains by oppression, will not go unpunished, and that a little with righteousness is better than great revenues with injustice. The teaching invites the seeker to pursue prosperity in a way that does not poison the soul or sacrifice what matters most. This anticipates the well-documented modern phenomenon that wealth pursued at the cost of health, relationships, and integrity often brings misery, while income earned with balance and meaning genuinely enhances life satisfaction.

The blessing of the Lord makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.

Book of Proverbs, Proverbs 10:22

Well-being research confirms the Proverbs distinction: wealth pursued at the cost of health and relationships often brings misery, while balanced, meaningful earning genuinely enhances life satisfaction.
