Gratitude — The Gateway to Abundance

Across the wisdom traditions, gratitude is the doorway to abundance, reorienting the mind from what is missing to what is present and so multiplying the sense and the reality of having enough.

Sacred traditions from the Psalms to the Vedas open their day and their rites with thanksgiving, recognizing that a grateful heart perceives a world already brimming with gifts. Gratitude shifts attention away from lack, the anxious focus that drives compulsive and wasteful spending, toward appreciation of what one holds, which is the felt experience of wealth itself. To count blessings is to discover that one is richer than scarcity-thinking allowed one to believe. Modern positive psychology, through the studies of Robert Emmons and others, finds that regular gratitude practice measurably increases well-being, optimism, and even prudent financial behavior such as patience and saving. Beginning each dawn in gratitude therefore primes both the mind and the purse for abundance, making thankfulness the first and surest principle of prosperity consciousness.

Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance.

Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth

Robert Emmons's research on gratitude shows measurable gains in well-being, optimism, and patient financial behavior, giving empirical support to the ancient placing of thanksgiving at the gateway of abundance.

Gratitude is the counter-move: attention turned to what is held rather than what is missing. The research cited, Emmons and others, measures changes in the grateful person — well-being, optimism, patience with money — not changes in their circumstances.
