Susanoo - The Storm Kami

The powerful kami of storms and seas, brother of Amaterasu, representing the wild forces of nature.

Susanoo no Mikoto embodies the untamed power of storms, seas, and natural forces. Though sometimes destructive, he also slayed the eight-headed serpent and discovered the sacred Kusanagi sword. He teaches that wild energy, properly directed, brings protection and renewal.

Even the fierce storm serves the greater harmony of heaven and earth.

Traditional, Kojiki

Susanoo represents the integration of chaotic natural forces within the cosmic order.

  • What Shinto says about conflict with people close to you

The tradition's model troublemaker is a brother. Susanoo is destructive and is cast out of heaven, and he remains a kami the entire time — Shinto never revokes anyone's standing over how they behaved in a family fight.

  • What Shinto says about starting again after a fall

Susanoo is the one who wrecked things, and the tradition never retires him. Afterwards he kills the eight-headed serpent and finds the Kusanagi sword, which is Shinto's way of saying a destructive energy is redirected rather than cancelled.
