Shubatsu - Purification Implements
Sacred tools used in purification rituals, including the haraigushi wand and salt.
Shubatsu are the implements of purification, most notably the haraigushi (paper streamer wand) waved over worshippers to dispel impurity. Salt (shio) is also widely used for purification, scattered at thresholds and on wrestling rings to cleanse spaces of negative influences.
The haraigushi sweeps away impurity as wind scatters morning mist.
These implements demonstrate the material dimension of Shinto spiritual practice.
