Shizen - Nature as Divine Manifestation

The Shinto understanding that nature itself is the body and expression of the kami.

In Shinto, nature is not separate from divinity but is itself divine. Mountains, rivers, trees, and stones are not merely inhabited by kami but are the very manifestation of kami presence. To commune with nature is to commune with the sacred.

Every mountain peak, every flowing stream speaks the presence of the kami.

Traditional, Shinto teachings

This nature-based spirituality makes Shinto inherently ecological.

Written about in

  • What Shinto says about reverence

Nature is not the dwelling place of the divine so much as its body. On this reading a mountain is not holy because a kami visits it.

  • What Shinto says about beauty

Shinto does not say nature is beautiful because it was well made. It says the mountain is not the house of the kami but the kami itself, which removes the artist from the picture and leaves you looking directly at the thing.
