Haiden - The Worship Hall

The outer hall of a shrine where worshippers offer prayers.

The haiden is the worship hall where visitors offer prayers, toss coins, ring bells, and make petitions to the kami. It stands before the honden (main sanctuary) where the kami resides, allowing worshippers to approach sacred space while respecting appropriate boundaries.

At the haiden, the worshipper's heart meets the kami's presence.

Traditional, Shrine teachings

The haiden mediates between ordinary space and the innermost sanctuary.
