Butsudan - The Family Buddhist Altar
The altar honoring deceased family members with Buddhist and Shinto elements.
Though primarily Buddhist, the butsudan often incorporates Shinto elements in Japanese homes. Here families honor deceased relatives with offerings of food, incense, and prayers. The butsudan represents the continuing presence of ancestors within the family.
At the butsudan, we remember those who came before and honor their memory.
The butsudan exemplifies the synthesis of Shinto and Buddhist practice in Japan.
