Hukam - Divine Will

Everything happens according to God's will. Accepting Hukam brings peace and liberation.

Hukam is the divine order governing the universe. Nothing occurs outside this will. Accepting Hukam doesn't mean passivity but aligning one's actions with cosmic purpose while surrendering outcomes.

By His Command, all forms come into being; His Command cannot be described.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Guru Granth Sahib, Ang 1

Understanding Hukam is central to accepting life's challenges with equanimity.

  • What Sikhism says about hope

Hukam says nothing happens outside the divine command, which is the load-bearing claim under chardi kala: if the worst thing is inside the order rather than outside it, despair loses its footing. Japji Sahib also says the command cannot be described — you are asked to trust an order you cannot read.
