Grace and Effort
Liberation comes through both personal effort and divine grace working together.
Sikhism teaches a balanced approach: effort is necessary but insufficient. Divine grace (Nadar) completes what human effort begins. This keeps practitioners humble while encouraging diligence.
By self-effort nothing is accomplished; liberation comes through the Lord's Grace.
The interplay of effort and grace is a key Sikh teaching.

- What Sikhism says about hope
"By self-effort nothing is accomplished" would license giving up, except the tradition pairs it with the demand that you work anyway. Effort is called necessary and insufficient in the same breath, which is the formula that keeps hope from collapsing into either anxiety or passivity.
