Stoicism

Freedom from Passion (Apatheia)

Apatheia is not the absence of feeling but freedom from irrational, excessive emotions that distort judgment.

Stoic apatheia is often misunderstood as emotional numbness. In fact, it means freedom from pathē — irrational passions like excessive fear, lust, grief, and desire. The sage still experiences eupatheiai (good emotions): joy, caution, and wishing. What is absent is the distortion of reason by disproportionate reactions.

You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

The Stoic goal is apatheia — freedom from destructive passion through right judgment, not the mere suppression or denial of feeling.
