Stoicism

Sympathy and Compassion

The Stoic sage feels genuine warmth and concern for others without being destabilized by their suffering.

Stoic compassion is not cold indifference. The sage cares deeply about others' wellbeing and works energetically to alleviate suffering. What the sage lacks is the irrational belief that another's suffering is necessarily terrible or beyond help. This grounded compassion is more effective than compassion destabilized by distress.

Wherever there is a human being, there is an opportunity for a kindness.

Seneca, Letters to Lucilius

Stoic compassion parallels the Buddhist bodhisattva ideal: helping others from a settled mind rather than being overwhelmed by their suffering.
