Truthful Speech
The Stoic speaks truth clearly and directly, neither flattering others nor distorting truth for self-interest.
Stoics valued frank speech (parrhesia) as a natural expression of rational honesty. Flattery corrupts both the flatterer and the flattered; it prioritizes pleasant falsehood over uncomfortable truth. The Stoic commits to speaking truthfully even when it is unwelcome, while doing so with appropriate tact and compassion.
If anyone can refute me—show me I'm making a mistake or looking at things from the wrong perspective—I'll gladly change.
The Stoic valorization of frank speech influenced Roman rhetorical culture and anticipates contemporary norms of intellectual honesty.
