Stoicism

Civic Participation

The Stoic has a duty to participate in civic life and contribute to the good governance of their community.

Unlike the Epicurean withdrawal from public life, Stoics saw civic participation as a natural duty. Rational beings are social; the polis or republic is a natural institution. Therefore, good citizens contribute to its proper functioning, even when political life is frustrating or dangerous.

That which is not good for the swarm is not good for the bee.

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Book 6

Stoic civic ethics made it naturally adaptable to Roman imperial service and later to Christian engagement with political power.
