Learning from History
Studying history reveals the recurring patterns of human life and the consistent triumph of virtue over circumstance.
Marcus Aurelius found great comfort in history: the same patterns recur, the same struggles appear, the same virtues are needed. What one faces today was faced by countless predecessors. History is thus both humbling (no situation is unique) and encouraging (humans have navigated these waters before).
All is ephemeral — fame and the famous as well.
Stoic historical consciousness supports equanimity by contextualizing present troubles within the vast continuity of human experience.
