Epistemic Humility
Acknowledging the limits of one's knowledge and the possibility of error is a sign of wisdom, not weakness.
Stoics valued the Academic skeptical challenge as an opportunity for epistemic humility. While they held that knowledge is possible and that certain impressions 'grasp' reality correctly, they also insisted on careful scrutiny of all impressions. The sage assents only to what is demonstrably clear and holds other beliefs tentatively.
All things, Lucilius, are not from our opinion; even virtue itself is not exempt from this verdict.
Stoic epistemology engaged seriously with Academic skepticism, producing a sophisticated account of probable knowledge under uncertainty.
