Intellectual Honesty
Following the argument wherever it leads, even when uncomfortable, is the mark of genuine philosophical commitment.
Stoics valued intellectual honesty above reputation or comfort. Marcus Aurelius explicitly welcomed correction: if someone shows him a better way of thinking, he will gratefully adopt it. This openness to revision — following the best argument rather than defending one's position — is central to the philosophical life.
If someone is able to show me that what I think or do is not right, I will happily change.
Stoic intellectual honesty anticipates the scientific norm of falsifiability and the philosophical virtue of intellectual courage.
