Shakti — The Dynamic Power of Consciousness
Shakti is the divine feminine power that is inseparable from Shiva — the dynamic, creative, energetic aspect of absolute consciousness through which the universe is created, sustained, and dissolved.
In Tantra, the universe is understood as the dance of Shiva (pure consciousness) and Shakti (divine energy/power). Shiva without Shakti is inert — pure potential without expression. Shakti without Shiva is chaos — pure energy without direction. Together they constitute the complete reality: consciousness expressing itself as the entirety of existence. Shakti operates through her three fundamental powers: Iccha Shakti (the power of will/desire), Jnana Shakti (the power of knowledge), and Kriya Shakti (the power of action). These three are the Tantric equivalent of the Vedantic Sat-Chit-Ananda (Being-Consciousness-Bliss) and map onto the Hindu trinity of Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva in their creative, sustaining, and transformative aspects. The Tantric path cultivates all three: awakening the will, purifying knowledge, and channeling action through practices aligned with divine intent.
Without Shakti, Shiva is a corpse. Without Shiva, Shakti has no direction. Together, they are the universe.
Physicist David Bohm's distinction between the 'explicate order' (the manifest world) and the 'implicate order' (the enfolded ground of being) maps onto the Shiva-Shakti polarity: Shakti as the explicate movement of manifestation, Shiva as the implicate ground of pure awareness.
