Mudras — Sacred Gestures of Power
Mudras are symbolic hand gestures, body positions, and internal energy seals that communicate with the subtle body, direct prana, and create specific states of consciousness.
Mudra (seal, gesture, or mark) encompasses three categories in the Tantric tradition: hand gestures (Hasta Mudras) used in puja and meditation; body postures (Kaya Mudras) that affect energy flow; and inner energy seals (Maha Mudras) that work directly with kundalini. Major mudras include: Jnana Mudra (wisdom seal — thumb and index finger touching), Chin Mudra, Shambhavi Mudra (third-eye gaze), Khechari Mudra (tongue rolled back to touch the soft palate — said to produce immortal nectar), and Yoni Mudra (sealing the senses). Each mudra is said to seal a specific circuit in the energy body, redirecting the flow of prana. The Gheranda Samhita describes 25 mudras and their effects.
The mudras are the language of the energy body — practicing them, one speaks directly to the subtle forces of consciousness.
Embodied cognition research (Lakoff, Johnson, Varela) has established that bodily gesture, posture, and physical action fundamentally shape conceptual thought and emotional experience — supporting the Tantric understanding that mudras have genuine cognitive and consciousness-altering effects.
