Laya Yoga — Dissolution into the Absolute

Laya Yoga is the Tantric practice of dissolving the mind and all its modifications into their source — absolute consciousness — through direct contemplation of the void at the heart of all experience.

Laya (dissolution) Yoga is the practice of systematically dissolving the tattvas (principles of manifestation) back into their source. Beginning with the grossest elements and working backward through the 36 tattvas of Kashmir Shaivism, the Laya practitioner meditates on each principle, recognizes it as a modification of consciousness, and dissolves it back into pure awareness. This is the reverse of the creative process — instead of consciousness manifesting as the universe, the practitioner's consciousness returns through the layers of manifestation to its source. The Vijnanabhairava Tantra is the primary text of Laya Yoga practice, offering 112 dharanas (concentration methods) for achieving direct recognition of pure consciousness. Among the most powerful are: concentrating on the space between thoughts; meditating on the moment of falling asleep; contemplating infinite space; and recognizing awareness as the witness of all experience.

Dissolve the mind in its source. Find the space between thoughts. In that space — Shiva.

The Vijnanabhairava Tantra repeatedly points to the gap between two breaths or two thoughts (madhya) as an opening into pure consciousness — the essence of Laya Yoga's dissolution of mind.
