Tantra

Mantra — The Sacred Sound Vehicle

Mantra (from man — mind, tra — vehicle) is a sacred syllable, word, or phrase charged with specific vibratory power, which when properly received, practiced, and concentrated upon, produces specific effects on consciousness and reality.

Mantra (sacred sound) is one of the three primary tools of Tantra (alongside Yantra and Tantra/text). In the Tantric view, the universe is composed of vibrational patterns of consciousness, and Sanskrit letters and syllables are not conventional symbols but actual sound-forms that mirror specific patterns of cosmic consciousness. The bija mantras (seed syllables — OM, AIM, HRIM, KLIM, SHRIM, etc.) are concentrated capsules of divine power that, when properly activated through initiation and sustained practice, directly affect the energy body and states of consciousness. Mantra works on four levels: Vaikhari (spoken), Madhyama (whispered), Pashyanti (mental), and Para (transcendent — the silence from which all sound arises). The Para level is the deepest and most powerful.

Mantra is not a word about the divine — it is the divine itself in sound form. Reciting it correctly, one becomes it.

Abhinavagupta, Tantraloka 15.13

Abhinavagupta treats mantra as sound saturated with consciousness rather than as ordinary language; the bija syllables carry no dictionary meaning yet are held to embody the deity's power.
