Matrika — The Mothers of Sanskrit Letters

Matrika Shakti is the power inherent in the 50 letters of the Sanskrit alphabet — the divine mothers through whom all of creation is spoken into existence and through whom all liberation is possible.

Matrika Shakti (the power of letters) is a fundamental concept in Kashmir Shaivism and Tantric philosophy. The 50 letters of the Sanskrit alphabet are not conventional symbols but the very building blocks of consciousness and reality — each letter is a form of Shakti, a divine mother (matrika) through whom specific aspects of consciousness are expressed. All of creation is 'spoken' into existence by Shiva through these letters; all of human thought and language operates through the Matrika Shaktis. The tragedy is that because we are unaware of the divine nature of letters — using them unconsciously — they bind us in the web of conceptual thought (the net of Matrika). When recognized as Shiva's own self-expression, the same letters that bind become liberators. Abhinavagupta's Paratrishika Vivarana contains the most profound analysis of Matrika Shakti in the tradition.

The letters of the alphabet are the mothers of all creation — known as divine, they liberate; known as mere symbols, they bind.

Philosopher Jacques Derrida's deconstruction of language — showing that meaning is never simply present but always deferred through an endless chain of differences — touches the Kashmir Shaivism concern with how language constructs reality and how consciousness can be liberated from its own linguistic constructions.
