Yoga Nidra — The Yoga of Conscious Sleep

Yoga Nidra (yogic sleep) is the Tantric practice of maintaining awareness at the threshold between waking and sleep — the hypnagogic state — accessing deep healing, reprogramming, and spontaneous insight.

Yoga Nidra (yogic sleep) is a Tantric practice of progressive relaxation leading to a state between waking and sleep — the hypnagogic threshold — in which consciousness remains active while the body and ordinary thinking mind rest completely. In this state, the practitioner is said to be in contact with the Prajna (causal body) and has access to the powerful reprogramming potential of the deep unconscious. Systematized by Swami Satyananda Saraswati (Bihar School of Yoga) based on Tantric sources, Yoga Nidra includes a Sankalpa (intention/resolve) planted at the threshold of consciousness where it bypasses ordinary ego resistance. A single hour of Yoga Nidra is said to provide the rest of four hours of ordinary sleep.

Between waking and sleep, at the threshold of dreams — there, the mind is most receptive and the Self most accessible.

Swami Satyananda, Yoga Nidra, Introduction

Swami Satyananda systematized modern Yoga Nidra from tantric nyasa, guiding awareness through a fixed rotation of the body parts while the practitioner stays awake at the threshold of sleep.
