Satsang — The Company of Truth

Satsang (the company of truth/wise persons) is recognized as the single most powerful support for spiritual practice — being in the presence of those who have realized the truth directly accelerates one's own recognition.

Satsang (Sanskrit: sat = truth/being, sanga = company/association) is the practice of associating with those who have realized or are sincerely pursuing the truth of consciousness. The Tantric tradition, like all Indian philosophical traditions, insists that Satsang is not optional but essential — 'without Satsang, liberation is impossible.' The reasoning is both practical and metaphysical: practically, the presence of those who embody non-dual awareness creates a resonance field that supports the recognition in others; metaphysically, Shiva recognizes himself through all forms, and the concentrated presence of Shiva's self-recognition in a realized being is like a lamp lighting another lamp. Modern interpretations of Satsang include spiritual study circles, meditation communities, and the online presence of authentic teachers.

Of all means of liberation, Satsang alone is the highest. Even a moment with a realized being can dissolve years of confusion.

Shankaracharya, Vivekachudamani 4

Shankaracharya's tradition counts satsang among the surest aids to liberation, holding that the company of the wise ripens into dispassion, dispassion into steadiness, and steadiness into liberation.
