Tantra and Healing — The Spiritual Basis of Medicine

Tantra's understanding of the energy body, the five elements, and the relationship between consciousness and matter provides a comprehensive spiritual foundation for understanding and healing disease.

Tantra and Ayurveda are intimately related in the Indian tradition — both see the body as a manifestation of the five elements, both work with prana and the energy body, and both understand disease as ultimately rooted in the disconnection from the divine. Tantric healing (Tantra Chikitsa) works at multiple levels: at the physical level through Ayurvedic herbs and treatments; at the subtle body level through mantra, yantra, and energy work; at the causal level through addressing the karmic and psychological roots of illness; and at the spiritual level through Bhakti, Jnana, and ultimately the recognition of one's fundamental nature as Sat-Chit-Ananda (Being-Consciousness-Bliss) — which is inherently whole and cannot be truly ill. The Atharva Veda, one of Tantra's roots, is entirely devoted to healing — making medicine one of Tantra's oldest and most continuous applications.

The root of all illness is the forgetting of one's divine nature. The root of all healing is the remembering of it.

Atharva Veda, Atharva Veda 2.1

The Atharva Veda already binds medicine to mantra and rite, treating illness as a disturbance of the whole person; Tantra inherits this view, in which healing addresses body, breath, mind, and spirit together.

  • What Tantra says about illness and the body failing

Tantric healing works at four levels at once: herbs and Ayurvedic treatment, mantra and yantra on the subtle body, the karmic and psychological roots, and the recognition that one's nature as Sat-Chit-Ananda cannot be ill. That last level is where the tradition turns cruel if mishandled — 'you were never sick' is no comfort to a body that is — which is why the Atharva Veda, devoted entirely to healing, keeps actual medicine in the picture.
