Tantra's Contribution to World Philosophy
Tantra has made foundational contributions to philosophy of mind, aesthetics, linguistics, cosmology, and ethics that deserve recognition alongside the great philosophical traditions of East and West.
Kashmir Shaivism represents one of humanity's most sophisticated philosophical achievements — a comprehensive, internally consistent account of the nature of consciousness, the structure of reality, the problem of evil, the nature of freedom, and the path to liberation that anticipates and in some ways surpasses contemporary philosophy of mind, phenomenology, and quantum physics. Abhinavagupta's analysis of consciousness, will, and freedom; Utpaladeva's recognition epistemology; Kshemaraja's analysis of the intersubjective structure of experience; and Vasugupta's vibration metaphysics all deserve a place alongside Kant's epistemology, Husserl's phenomenology, and Whitehead's process philosophy. The tragedy is that language barriers, the association of Tantra with sexuality, and the lack of trained translators have prevented this philosophical tradition from receiving the recognition it deserves in global philosophical discourse.
Kashmir Shaivism is the most complete philosophy of consciousness that human beings have produced — East or West.
Philosopher Graham Priest's work on paraconsistent logic and dialethism — the claim that some contradictions can be true — provides one of the rare Western philosophical tools capable of articulating the Kashmir Shaivism claim that the absolute is simultaneously everything and nothing, the one and the many.
