Samudaya - The Origin of Suffering

Craving, attachment, and ignorance are the root causes of all suffering.

The Second Noble Truth identifies tanha (craving) as the origin of suffering. This includes craving for sensual pleasures, existence, and non-existence. Understanding this causation empowers us to address suffering at its root.

Attachment is the root of all suffering.

Buddha, Pali Canon

Identifying the cause of suffering is the first step toward its cessation.

  • What Tibetan Buddhism says about envy and comparison

The Second Noble Truth names tanha, craving, as the origin of suffering — craving for pleasure, for existence, and for non-existence. Envy is craving with a witness attached: not merely wanting the thing, but wanting it because someone else already holds it.
