Emptiness of Self

The person or self lacks inherent, independent existence.

Pudgala-nairatmya is the emptiness of the person - the realization that 'I' exists merely as a label designated upon the aggregates, without any findable, independent self-essence.

The self is neither the aggregates nor different from the aggregates.

Chandrakirti, Madhyamakavatara

Realizing emptiness of self liberates from self-grasping.

  • What Tibetan Buddhism says about envy and comparison

Chandrakirti argues the self is neither the aggregates nor separate from them: I exists as a label designated on a process, with nothing findable standing behind it. Comparison requires two solid parties, and this is the tradition's attempt to remove one of them.
