Ten Non-Virtuous Actions

The ten actions to be avoided that create negative karma.

The ten non-virtuous actions are: killing, stealing, sexual misconduct (body); lying, divisive speech, harsh speech, idle talk (speech); covetousness, malice, wrong views (mind).

Abandon non-virtue and practice virtue.

Buddha, Traditional Teaching

Avoiding the ten non-virtues protects from lower rebirths.

  • What Tibetan Buddhism says about doing no harm

Ten actions to avoid, sorted into body, speech and mind. Three of them are mental, which is where this tradition thinks harm is decided.

  • What Tibetan Buddhism says about envy and comparison

Covetousness and malice sit on the list of ten non-virtues alongside killing and stealing, classed as actions of mind. A comparison you never spoke aloud still counts as an act with consequences, which is a heavier standard than most ethical systems apply.
