The Upanishads

The Immortal Self

The true Self is beyond birth and death.

The Atman was never born and will never die. It is eternal, ancient, and not slain when the body is slain. This knowledge frees from fear of death.

The Self is not born, nor does it ever die. It is unborn, eternal, everlasting, ancient. It is not slain when the body is slain.

Katha Upanishad, Katha Upanishad 1.2.18

This verse is echoed in the Bhagavad Gita's teaching on the soul.

  • What the Upanishads say about grief

Katha states it flatly: the Self is unborn, eternal, and not slain when the body is slain. The claim the entry makes for that knowledge is a narrow one — that it frees a person from the fear of death — and it arrives as an assertion: something to be verified in yourself, not a proof you are asked to accept.
