The Upanishads

Fullness - Purna

Brahman is complete and infinite.

Brahman is purna - full, complete, infinite. From fullness comes fullness, yet fullness remains. This paradox points to the infinite nature of reality.

That is full, this is full. From fullness comes fullness. Taking fullness from fullness, fullness remains.

Isha Upanishad, Isha Upanishad Invocation

This verse captures the paradox of infinity.

Isha Upanishad

Written about in

  • What the Upanishads say about the purpose of life

From fullness, fullness is taken, and fullness remains. Whatever purpose means here, it is not the filling of a gap.

  • What the Upanishads say about grief

From fullness comes fullness; take fullness away from fullness and fullness remains. The Isha invocation is the nearest thing this tradition has to a consolation for subtraction — it claims that what is infinite is not reduced by what is removed from it.
