Patanjali Yoga Sutras

Samskaras (Mental Impressions)

Samskaras are the deep impressions left in the mind-field by every experience — the accumulated residue of all past actions, perceptions, and emotions that silently shapes present experience and future destiny.

Every experience leaves an impression (samskara) in the chitta. These impressions accumulate over a lifetime — and according to Patanjali, over many lifetimes — forming the deep conditioning patterns (vasanas) that generate automatic thoughts, habitual reactions, and persistent personality traits. The technical yoga teaching is that samskaras are stored in a subtle body that persists beyond death, carrying the person's entire experiential history into their next incarnation as a set of pre-installed tendencies. In practical terms (bracketing the metaphysical question of rebirth), samskaras are simply what psychologists call 'implicit memory' — the vast storehouse of learned associations and emotional patterns that operate below conscious awareness but powerfully shape behavior. Yoga practice works directly on samskaras through both creating new positive impressions and dissolving the kleshic root that gives old negative samskaras their germinating power.

Memory and samskaras are one in form, even when separated by birth, place, and time.

Patanjali, Yoga Sutras 4.9

Neuroscientist Joseph LeDoux's concept of 'synaptic self' — the idea that the self is constituted by the sum of its synaptic connections, which are themselves formed by experience — provides a neural mechanism for Patanjali's samskara theory: 'neurons that fire together wire together' is the biological basis of samskara formation.

  • What the Yoga Sutras say about habit and discipline

Samskaras are the impressions each experience deposits in the chitta, accumulating into vasanas that drive automatic reactions. This is the mechanism that makes repetition matter: you are not accumulating willpower, you are laying down material. Patanjali holds these impressions persist beyond death; the practical teaching works whether or not you accept that.
