Zoroastrianism

Druj - The Lie

The fundamental principle of evil, falsehood, and disorder.

Druj is the Lie - the opposite of Asha (Truth). It encompasses all falsehood, disorder, destruction, and evil. Those who follow Druj are called dregvants (followers of the Lie) and face dire consequences.

The followers of the Lie shall know destruction.

Zarathustra, Gathas

Druj is the cosmic opposite of Asha.

  • What Zoroastrianism says about good and evil

Evil has a single name here, and the name is the Lie. It covers falsehood, disorder and destruction together, which makes lying a cosmic matter rather than a small one.

  • What Zoroastrianism says about truth and lying

Druj gives lying a name and a side. Zoroastrian texts call the wicked dregvants — followers of the Lie — which means untruth is treated as a party you have joined, not a mistake you have made.
