Zoroastrianism

Mithra

The yazata of covenant, light, and judgment.

Mithra is the yazata of contracts, light, and the sun. He oversees oaths and punishes oath-breakers. His worship became widespread throughout the Roman Empire as Mithraism.

Mithra sees all; break not your word before him.

Zoroastrian Teaching, Avesta

Mithra's influence extended far beyond Zoroastrianism.

  • What Zoroastrianism says about truth and lying

Mithra is the yazata of contracts, and he punishes oath-breakers specifically. Zoroastrianism separates the broken promise from the ordinary lie and treats it as the graver offence, because a contract binds another person's life to your word.
