What Tibetan Buddhism says about service
Mahayana Buddhism opens with a promise to be useful to every living being, which is a large thing to say and an awkward thing to begin on a Tuesday. The concepts below are how the Tibetan tradition breaks it down: giving in three kinds, fitting the help to the person, treating the job you already have as the place it happens. One or two will look unfamiliar, like handing away the benefit of your own practice at the end of each session. Each links to its full entry, with the source the library names.
The Bodhisattva Vow
The commitment that starts the Mahayana path: to work for the freedom of all beings, placing their welfare before your own.
Bodhicaryavatara
Bodhisattva Activity
Service is set out as activities rather than as a feeling - pacifying, enriching, drawing in, subduing - and judged by whether beings actually benefit.
Bodhicaryavatara
Dana Paramita - Generosity
Giving comes in three kinds here: material things, protection from fear, and teaching. The second is often the one a person can actually offer.
Itivuttaka
Skillful Means - Upaya
Fitting the help to the person in front of you rather than to your own idea of what help looks like.
Mahayana Teachings
The Four Means of Gathering Disciples
Four plain methods: give what is needed, speak pleasantly, teach at the level the hearer is at, and do what you tell others to do.
Bodhisattva Teachings
Working as Service
Ordinary work becomes the practice when the motive changes. Colleagues as people to serve, tasks as offerings, results given away.
Engaged Buddhism
The Medicine Buddha Practice
A practice directed at the sick and the dying, invoking the healing buddha on their behalf.
Medicine Buddha Sutra
Healing Through Prayer
Aspiration and prayer are counted as real work for others in this tradition, made consistently rather than once.
Four Immeasurables
Dedication of Merit
Every session ends by giving away whatever good came of it. The library notes this also protects the merit from being burned off by anger.
Dedication Prayers
One detail is worth carrying away. Nearly every practice here ends by giving the result away, which leaves nothing to keep score with. Service arranged like that is difficult to turn into a reputation.
