What yoga nidra says about energy and tiredness
Tiredness is not one thing, and this material treats it as several. The five sheaths, the breath centres and the paired sensations are all ways of finding out where the tiredness actually sits before trying to do anything about it. The ten concepts below run roughly in the order a session moves through them. They describe what the practice does, not what it will fix for you.
The Five Sheaths — Navigating the Koshas (Pancha Kosha Viveka)
The practice moves through five layers: flesh, breath, mind, discernment, and a final layer the text calls bliss. The sequence matters because it stops you treating every kind of tiredness as a muscular one.
Taittiriya Upanishad 2.1-5
The Navel Center as the Sun of Prana (Manipura Shvasa)
Attention is placed at the navel and the breath is felt spreading outward from there. In the hatha texts this is where vitality is held rather than where it is spent.
Hatha Yoga Pradipika 3.79
The Throat Center as the Ocean of Stillness (Vishuddha Shanti)
The throat is used as a cooling point, settling mental agitation before it becomes speech. It is a small stage and easy to skip, which is part of why it is named separately.
Shat Chakra Nirupana 28
The Heart Cave as the Seat of Unconditional Acceptance (Anahata Karuna)
Resting the breath at the heart is the part of the practice where nothing is being corrected. The Katha's cave of the heart is the older image behind it.
Katha Upanishad 2.1.12
Sensation of Extreme Heaviness (Gravitational Surrender) (Guru Bhava)
Deliberately inducing heaviness lets the body finally give its weight to the floor. Most people go on holding themselves up long after they have lain down.
Yoga Nidra Core Protocol
Sensation of Weightlessness (Levitation of Spirit) (Laghu Bhava)
Heaviness is then reversed into lightness. The point of the pair is that both are produced by attention, which makes both easier to set down.
Vijnana Bhairava Tantra 68
Rapid Sensation Switching — Neural Plasticity Mastery (Dvandva Parivartana)
Moving quickly between heavy and light, or hot and cold, trains a kind of flexibility in how sensation is held. Patanjali's line on the pairs of opposites is the root of the exercise.
Yoga Sutras 2.48
Dissolving the Solid Body into Pranic Space (Deha Shunya Dhyana)
The dense body is felt as hollow and spacious instead. This is the clearest case of the practice working on the sense of being stuck in a tired body rather than on the tiredness.
Tripura Rahasya 10.33
The Whole Body as One Luminous Unit (Sarvanga Ekatva)
The scan ends by feeling the entire body at once rather than part by part. It is the point at which the inventory stops and something simpler takes over.
Vijnana Bhairava Tantra 54
Sensation of Uncaused Ecstatic Joy (Ananda) (Sukha-Ananda Bhava)
Near the end, a joy that has no object and no reason is evoked. The Taittiriya places this at the innermost sheath, which is why it comes last and not first.
Taittiriya Upanishad 2.8
Energy here is less something you acquire than something you stop spending. The concepts do not claim the day will get easier; they claim a good deal of ordinary fatigue is effort you are still making without noticing. That is checkable by anyone, which is rarer in this subject than it should be.
