What Zen says about fear and anxiety
Fear in this collection is treated as a relationship with an imagined future, and the practices work on the relationship rather than the prediction. There is no argument to win. There is somewhere to put your attention, a posture to sit in, and a willingness to not know. Nine concepts follow, several of which are simply instructions.
Letting Go of Future
Most anxiety is about something that has not happened. The practice is to notice that, then check whether this moment — the actual one — is all right.
Releasing Control
The entry traces the need to control back to fear, and suggests things often run better with less intervention. Less gripping, not passivity.
Mindful Breathing
The breath works as an anchor because it is always with you. Returning attention to it is the shortest way back from a future that is not here.

Mountain Meditation
Sit as a mountain: weather crosses it, seasons change over it, and it stays. The image is for stability that does not require stiffness.
Spacious Presence
Awareness held wide enough to contain the fear without tightening around it. Nothing has to be pushed away for this to work.
Presence with Pain
The habit with pain, physical or emotional, is to flee or distract. This practice is to stay with it — neither seeking it out nor running.
Not-Knowing Mind
Fear often demands a certainty it cannot get. Zen treats saying "I do not know" as the open position rather than the failed one.
Beginner's Mind
Shoshin means meeting the situation without the expert's set of expectations. A good deal of what frightens us is the prediction rather than the thing.

Surrendering to What Is
Accept what is actually the case, which the entry separates from giving up: you still work towards what could be.
Only two of these nine name a source at all — one an early Buddhist discourse on breathing, one a twentieth-century Zen teacher. The rest are practice instructions passed on without a text behind them, at least as this library records them. Take that as a reason to test them rather than to trust them.
