Sound Meditation

Using sound as the object of meditation, particularly the resonance of bells and singing bowls.

In Zen monasteries, the day is structured by bells - waking bell, meditation bell, meal bell. Each sound is an invitation to presence. Sound meditation involves listening deeply to a bell, gong, or singing bowl, following the sound from strike through resonance until it dissolves into silence. This practice reveals the impermanent nature of all phenomena and trains the mind to remain present. Studies show that Tibetan singing bowls reduce tension, anger, and fatigue while increasing spiritual well-being. The vibrations may also have direct physiological effects, influencing brainwave patterns.
